Colour ladder

This one is not so easy to understand if you're not familiar with colour theory. Use paints if you can but crayons are ok. 

Put the primary colours in the central row. Then if you thin a colour it gets lighter and will merge to white at the top.

To darken the colours you could add black but you will get a better result if you add the complementary colour little by little till you reach something close to black. Eg Yellow add violet bit by bit, blue add orange bit by bit, etc. The results will vary according to the medium you use.
