The object of this exercise is to find interesting and descriptive ways of using space that can be developed in fabric decoration, eg using drawing and painting materials, outliners, embroidery, applique....

3 sheets of A4 should be sufficient, divide each page into 6 blocks. Try working on tracing paper too. You can overlay it onto the other pieces.

Use whatever you have at home to create a series of blocks describing different textures, moods, shapes, tones, colours, etc.  Rubbings work well for this.

Google expressive mark making to get some ideas, this is also used as a mindfulness exercise so enjoy. There are no rules, rights or wrongs, you may just need to find your inner child.

Resources you could use include: pencils, paint, brushes, pastels, sponges, anything you have to hand, if you think you have no drawing materials use up any old make up you've been hanging onto and should clear out even nail varnish.

Allow a little space on each page to make notes on what you used and how; any Health and Safety considerations; and how you feel about the results.

You can incorporate your notes into your mark making/doodles or add an additional text page.

Put the originals in your folder.
