Today we used the BBC Bitesize video to revise language techniques, and consider which ones we could use in a persuasive speech.

This BBC Bitesize unit - Analysing Language - revises a number of language techniques we have covered, but it goes further into the areas of tone and style. It will be a very useful unit to complete before the next class as we will be using some of these techniques in our writing.

This week's topic is newspaper articles. We will look at the standard structure of a news article (illustrated by the inverted triangle). We will read an article which will follow a certain structure the structure. We will then collaborate to create ideas for a news story. Your homework is to complete the news article you began in class. All the handouts are here.

Today we looked at the writing requirements for the Functional Skills exam. The handout outlining these is below.
We also recapped the process of writing including planning. I have added the slides about the 5Ws and Observe-Wonder-Infer, plus a handout explaining spider diagrams in more detail.

This term we will be focusing on writing skills. Over the course of the term we will be covering:
- planning your writing
- generating ideas for your writing
- writing in different formats (email, report, article etc)
- using different styles of writing (narrative, persuasive, formal business etc)
- building L2 vocabulary
- building complexity into your writing
- spelling!!!
- punctuation - particularly commas and apostrophes

1. Using the Noisy Office source documents, contrast the opinions in Documents 1 and 2 about the impact of noise on creativity.
2. Using the Social Media source documents, contrast how organisations use social media based on the information in Documents 1 and 3.

We will be comparing and contrasting viewpoints in texts. We will also be discussing bias. To prepare for this, please complete the following sections of BKSB. You should have access to both Level 1 and Level 2 modules on BKSB. If you don't, please let me know.

The next topic we will be looking at is how we read and understand a text.
Please read the two texts which both relate to Black History Month. Both texts are from the Guardian. They are both long and are likely to contain vocabulary you don't know. Please ensure you give yourself enough time to read them properly. We will use these as a basis for discussion in the next lesson.
As you read, please think about the different styles of the writing, what the purposes are and how the authors are communicating.
