  • Week 13 (9/5/22)

Today you did a practice writing exam.

  • Week 12 (25/4/22)

Our topic this week was report writing. Reports have a specific purpose, structure (heading, sub-headings, charts and graphs) and language (passive voice and formal). There are also some key words which you need to be able to spell.

Your homework is to write a report based on the subject of food waste. All the resources, including website links and the task outline are in the folder below.

  • Week 11 (28/3/22)

This week we discussed how to write instructions. We look at different types of instructive writing such as recipes or how to.... type texts.

Your homework is to write a set of instructions based on the exam question below.

  • Week 10 (21/3/22)

Today we started by looking at the layout and style of different types of writing e.g. letter, email, article. We also discussed using the Observe-Wonder-Infer technique to help you think of ideas for your writing.

We then learnt how to write a recount/narrative text. We noticed that they are written in the past tense, in chronological order and use conjunctions to tell the order of the story.

We looked at some pictures of an accident scenario. You pretended you'd witnessed the accident and are writing up your witness statement for the police as your homework. The handouts and photos are below.

  • Week 9 (14/3/22)

Today we covered a variety of topics: the doubling spelling rule; using commas correctly; and a brief revision of letter writing.

The handouts for all aspects of the class are below, plus your homework, which was to write a letter.

  • Week 8 (7/3/22)

Today we began looking at writing skills. We looked at the requirements for the writing exam and we also did some spelling and punctuation assessments.

    The handouts are below.

  • Week 7 (28/2/22)

Today we practised the reading exam. Please find the L2 papers below.

You will also find the PP we looked out which explains the idea of comparing and contrasting.

  • Week 6 (21/2/22)

In the class, we revised fact, opinion and bias based on the BKSB modules you did. We then discussed inference (inferred meaning/reading between the lines). The attached PP shows the areas we covered.

We used Band Manager 1 to identify facts and opinions

We used Band Manager 2 to identify biased language e.g. strong one-sided opinion, exaggerated language.

We used the Clara text to discuss inference

Your homework is to complete the Inferred Meaning module on BKSB (Level 2 Reading-Text).

  • Week 5 (7/2/22)

Today I asked you to look at the Fact and Opinion, and Bias modules on BKSB. Some additional handouts and activities are below.

    • Please answer the questions in the Word document (Fact and opinion question sheet) by referring to the PDF files (Document 1, Document 2 and Document 3).

You can type your answers into the Word document and email it to me or simply email the answers to me.

  • Week 4 (31/1/22)

This week we looked at a selection of language features. We looked at some examples and discussed why they are used. I've put some of the examples in the folder below.

The handouts include the answers to the matching activity. It's very important that you are able to identify and name these language features.

We looked together at the Water Aid text. You found a range of language features. We then discussed the layout features and how they impact on the reader. Your homework is to summarise the language and layout features used in the leaflet.

    • Have a look at the leaflet. Find as many language techniques as you can (there is no alliteration). Also look at how the layout affects the reader. Then complete the table to summarise your findings.

    • You might like to download this handy reference sheet to help you with all the language techniques we discussed.

    • If you would like to do more on this subject, you can work through this GCSE module. It has lots of different language techniques in it.

  • Week 3 (24/01/22)

Today we discussed reading skills such as identifying the purpose of and audience of a text. We also began identifying layout features.
